Valencia will get $743,000 over threr years to create a centralized remedial used acrossfour campuses. It plans to aligm high school, remedial and college-leveo standards, expand its remedial learning communities, and embed readinbg skills into remedialmath courses. The grants, announcec June 22, will support remedial programs developed by Valenciza through Achievingthe Dream: Community Colleges Count, a multiyeae national initiative aimed at increasing college graduation rates amongy disadvantaged students. The state will get also get $300,0009 over three years to collaboratewith K-12 to reduce the need for remedial education.
Connecticut, Ohio, Texas and Virginia also got the which will be used to develop new policiew acceleratingthe states’ remedial education programs. The Florida grantsz are part ofa $16.5 million effort to improve remedial education at community collegesa in five states, reaching abouy 45,000 students nationwide. Four states and 14 other collegews received similar Gates grantse for their Achieving the Dream Each community college will receive $743,000 over three years to expans its programs. Lumina Foundatioj for Education has alsocommitted $1.5 million to this initiativew for evaluation and communications.
Abou t 375,000 Florida degree-seeking students annually attendr a localcmmunity college, with nearly 40 percent of them takint remedial classes to buildd basic academic skills. National studies have shown nearluy two-thirds of those taking remedial classezsnever graduate, but successful programs at severa colleges demonstrate these numbers can be improved.
