UMBI President Jenniee Hunter-Cevera steps down June 30. Change is almosf a certainty. UMBI is under fire from the stater and USM leaders for not producinh enough spinoff companies or attracting enoughprivated dollars. Myung Oak Kim, communications manager for the Governor’s Economidc Recovery Team, said “There is a fundamental problen with the report becauswe it does not take into account the fact that the Recoveryy Act allocates separate funds just fortransig projects. In addition to the surface transportatiomn dollars analyzed inthe report, Colorado will receive more than $100 millioj from the Recovery Act for capitapl transit projects. Among the Recovery Act transirt dollars comingto Colorado, the West Corridor line of FasTrackes is getting $40 million and Summitr County is getting $10 milliomn for a new bus maintenance facility.” The reporty comes a day before U.S.

Fundraising stays strong at Cal - San Francisco Business Times:

yqyqynesara.blogspot.com
The public university, never a fundraising powerhouse like its peerprivater institutions, is nevertheless on track to recorx its second-best fundraising year ever. As of Aprio 30, the school has logged giftw and pledgestotaling $256.7 million over $70 million of those since Jan. 1. The top year ever recordef was the 2008fiscal year, when UC Berkeleu tallied over $400 million in gifts and pledges, including the recorx $113 million matching grant from the . “Wde continue to record very strong gift revenuez intothe campus, even though there’s this very tougn economic downturn,” said David Blinder, associate vice chancellor for university That must be a relief. On Sept.
19, on the eve of the stock market implosion, Cal announcedc a $3 billion Campaign for Berkeley, one of the most ambitiouws fundraising drives undertaken byany university, nevermine a public one. No question, enthusiasj generated by the Hewlett grant, which will endow 100 faculty chairs and attract matching giftsof $1 million or more, and which expressly aims to keep Berkelet competitive with the likes of Harvard, Stanford and , has sparkefd major support for Cal, despite the recession. So far, 53 of the 100 chairs are matchedwith $65 million. Advanced conversationd with as many as 25 more potential donors areunder way, said Williamn Ausfahl, chair of the .
The challengr grant has fueled broader gifts to the In its firstpublic year, and with four years to go, Cal’s campaign has raised $1.5 billion. Today, Berkeley’sd endowment is probably just over $2 down between 20 percent and 25 Blinder said. That may sound like a lot, but in Harvard’s endowment had lost $8 billion since the downturn started, but still held $29 Blinder said that few major donors have canceled though some have had to extend theifpayment timeframe. The school is holdiny up better than many others with largeongoin campaigns.
That could be because donors see Berkeley’s relative need, and also enthusiasm over matchinvg grants and discrete capital campaignas such as thefirst $123 million phasew to rebuild Memorial Stadium, which will be complet e in Fall 2010. One major area that Cal hopexs to improve is alumni participationin philanthropy. “One of my goals, and a goal of this is to get the word out as broadlt as possible that private philanthropy is keyto Berkeley’se success in the future,” Blinder “Our peer private with endowments that far outstrip (have) an enormous advantage when it comes to facult salaries, financial aid, laboratory startup Most public universities see donations from about 14 percent of and Cal is no different.
Privatwe universities like Harvard, however, routinelyy see up to 40 percent of theiralumnij give. With 431,500 livinyg alumni, “there’s such high upside potential,” Ausfahll said. “One of the reasons that Cal is not goingh to be hurt as badly in aggregate as the privates is that we have a hugealumniu base, and it’s still largely untapped in terms of the donatiom levels.

Good managers can alleviate some staff fears - bizjournals:

esivyjifag.wordpress.com
Even if your business is in great shape andyou don’y expect any negative outcomes from less-than-perfect macro-economic your employees likely are feeling a littlw uneasy. If they are not worrierd about theirjob security, they might be worriedd about their spouse’s job, the value of their the value of their home or other Because the outputs of an organizationn are built from the actions of their health and wellness matter to an organization’s If uncertainty and fear are not dealf with positively, they can lead to stress and emotional troubles, a weakened immunee system and other health problems.
And those personal issues add up to issues for an An organization teeming with people paralyzed by fear is It will feel the pain in the form of lower absenteeism andlow morale. On the other hand, an organization with a resiliengt and confident work force will have greatedrproductivity (yes, resilient people work harder than others duringy change), greater job satisfaction, higher retentiojn and lower absenteeism — among othe r benefits. Whether fears are based on real orperceive threats, good managers can alleviate some of their staff’sw concerns.
Good managers can help peoplee stay focused and positive durinttough times, and help them continue to perform and add to the bottomm line. When people feel uncertain, they try to re-establisgh control, understanding, support and purpose. People naturallgy seek ways to feel in becausethey don’t like to feel change is happening them. They can find a feeling of controk in small things that might not be related to thechangse — such as carving out a small projecyt at home and tackling it stary to finish, creating or making something from scratch or organizing files and Managers can encourage people to focuw on the immediate and take pride in even smalpl accomplishments.
People also look to re-establisg understanding during timesof change. We feel like we are thrownb intoa funhouse; it takes a few minutees to learn to navigate sloping floors and floor-to-ceilinv mirrors. By developing a communication plan and engagingb people in discussions about where the organizationis going, managers can help peopld understand how the new worlr will work. People seek support in the midstf of uncertaintyand change. Somehow, everythingy seems a little better when people feel they arenot alone. Thosee gathered around the water coole are instinctively lookingfor support.

Tony Wilkerson, executive director of the , said his organizationn has begun to lend assistance to dealers lost in thebankruptcg shuffle. “Our national organization has already sent letters to them to let them know abou t our organization and I plan to do the same thiny forour state,” Wilkerson said. “They were in the used car busineswsanyway – but if you’re stuck like many of them are, the overhead costs for a used car dealershi p is nothing compared to a However, the expansion of the local used car markeyt comes as prices are increasing and the availabilithy of late-model used cars is pinched, he said. But according to Morgahn Murphy, president of motorpool.
com, the initia increase in prices should be looked at as merelya short-term hurdle. “At first glance, that would striked the community as bad but in thelong run, it’s good for resalee values,” Murphy said. When local consumers buy cars, they will be able to demande more when they choose tosell it, he In fact, the higher resale values might actually revived American car dealers in the area. “America manufacturing has been similar and just as good as Japanese and Korean manufacturing, but the problem has been re-sale value and initiap prices,” Murphy said.
In the meantime, Birmingham dealers affected can capitalize on the unique landscape of the local market on the usedcar side, he said. Many are family-ownex and have been staples in the community for many They are also encouraged by the fact that locap used car sales have seen an upticl amid the recession as buyers are more inclinee to look for a bargainb as a means tospenrd less. “Birmingham has a long and distinguished history ofreputable dealers,” Murphy said. “Don Drennen has been in busineswsince 1908. That’s 101 years of serviny our community, so there’ s a culture around businesseslike that.
” Theier long-standing history could make local buyers more inclinedf to buy used cars from them, he Ward Drennen, president of Don Drenneh Buick Chrysler and said after learning that his deale r agreement had been canceled with Chrysler, expanding his used car salex seemed like a real possibility. “Ww are going to expand our used car departments said Drennen, who was left with more than $2 milliob in Chrysler parts and merchandise. “We want to offee a great value to peoplewho can’ty afford a new car.
” Although he hasn’g stopped looking into becoming a franchisee for other automotivd manufacturers, he is open to the idea of makint the switch to stay in business. “It is possiblew that we could become a used car said Drennen, who also learned that GM will seek to cancekl the dealership agreement he has for his Buicik dealership. “We’ve been in Birmingham long enough that our reputatiojn can keepus afloat.

Metro seeks more control of convention center leadership - Denver Business Journal:

judonebolayb1394.blogspot.com
Metro councilors Rod Park and Rex Burkholder will introduced a measure next week givinfg the council authority over individuals who lead the Metropolitan ExpositionRecreatiob Commission. The motion comes after Metro Council President David Bragdon criticized the performancwe of MERC General Manager David Councilors want to overseethe hiring, salargy changes and employment statues of MERC’s top executive, according to a lettee Park and Burkholder sent to Don Trotter, who chairs the commission. Trotted and other commissioners currentlyu oversee the position and have given Woolson good mark during his first threejob reviews. The council will considetr the motion at its June11 meeting.
In a Marcn 31 letter to the commission regardingthe group’ds budget requests, Bragdon questioned both Woolson’s leadership as well as the agency’ higher budgets. Woolson’s office spent $470,568 durinv the 2007-08 fiscal year. The number jumpede to $838,803 for the current year. Woolson requeste d $877,808 for the 2009-10 fiscal year. However, in a lettet dated March 12, 2009 to Bragdon from Metro finance and administrative serviced directorMargo Norton, Woolson says the cost increase s are "primarily the result of a reorganization of the public affairs function and the cost and creatiom of a business development capability.
" Specifically, MERC'as public affairs manager and public affairs coordinatorr were "reclassified" to a director of communicationse and a director of business and community Woolson goes on to state that additional resources for goodx and services for the positions included consulting, sponsorships...and other general office expenses in order to have a more effectiver effort in this area." In the same letter, Woolso says the numbers alone don't paint an accurat e picture because of unfilled positions in earliere budgets. Bragdon also said Woolson movesd his office downtown and boosted consulting travel costs and othe expenseslast year.
He also collected “largr raises” that, by increasing his salary to $184,000, make him more highlyy paid thanhis predecessors. MERC moved downtown from the convention centerlast year. It occupies space in the Portlandf Center for thePerforming Arts, 1111 S.W. MERC, which operates the building, pays no rent for the One of theMERC Commission'a goals was to increase the organization's downtown presence. MERC's board approvedr Woolson's pay raises. The board said last year that Woolsoj “has accomplished (an) enormous amounyt of work and inspired staff. He has quicklyt detected problems and has move to alleviate orfix (sic).
Therd appears to be a new energyat Metro’s annual budget is $40 million. Woolson is the agency’s highest-paid employee.
