California added 156 megawattxsin 2008, compared to 81 in 2007, despites the global recession. Energy officials expect anotherd 150-plus megawatts added this year. The state announced a far-reachin $3.3 billion effort to install 3,000 megawatts of new grid-connected solar panelds by 2017, with the aim to curb developmenr andproduction costs. The accountz for two-thirds — or $2.2 billion — of the budget with a goal of installing 1,940 megawatts as part of the 10-yeart California Solar Initiative program. The Californiaq Solar Initiative has installer 13 percent of the goal forthe 10-year with another 8 percent in applicationsw pending during the firsft two years.
“This program is deliverinb on California’s commitment to the solar industry, whichg has an absolutely essential role to play in our efforts to addresssclimate change,” CPUC presidenr Michael Peevey said in a news release.
