Udall, D-Colo., is a co-sponsort and a chief backer of Senate Bill the Travel Promotion Actof 2009. The legislation wouldr create an Office of Travel Promotiob inthe , as well as a Traveo Promotion Fund that could get $100 million a year from fees on privatew travel promoters and usere of the government’s visa waivedr program. Udall took to the Senate floodr on June 16 to toutthe bill, trying to convincre his colleagues of the importancde of tourism in a state where almost 150,000 Coloradans owe thei jobs to the industry.
With international travel to the Unitee States having decreased sincethe 9/11 a renewed push to brinyg in foreign visitors would help the local and national he said. “The travel and tourism it’s a strong economic engine of Colorado — and it’sd one that we have to keep strong, that we have to invest in,” he said in floor debate. “And part of that is changinf the perception thatthe U.S. isn’t interestedd in hosting foreign tourists.
